East Midlands Airport is located in Derbyshire, between the trio of Midlands conurbations Nottingham, Derby and Leicester, next to the village of Castle Donington and its famous race track. The nearest significant town is Loughborough, seven miles away. It is a fairly small airport considering the amount of traffic it handles, with just one terminal and one runway.
Its location on the border of three counties has led to numerous name changes over the years: it was originally simply East Midlands Airport, before being rebranded in 2004 as Nottingham East Midlands and then East Midlands Airport: Nottingham, Leicester and Derby at the end of 2006.
